Dear Tomato

Dear Tomato,

Can you see? Have you tried to? Do you know what seeing is? I guess you’ll just keep quiet the entire time. I know you’ve not the faintest idea what it means to be human. That’s what I’ll try to change. You’ll see why uncle Darwin put us at the top of his list.

I don’t want to scare you right at the start with evolutionary biology. Life has much more interesting sides too. I hope you know what life is. Are you listening? Can you hear? Do you know what it is like to hear? I’ll continue anyway.

What makes us different is that we humans, more often than not, like to take time to process information that we gather from our surroundings using our senses. We call it thinking. And we use something called the ‘mind’ to do that. The mind is not quite a part of the physical body. But it kinda is. The mind is not quantifiable in the physical realm. But it’s there. It works. It’s partner in the physical realm is the brain, which I wish I could show you had I heads that can be cut open without terminating a life.  But there aren’t. The body cannot function without the mind, or the brain for that matter.

The brain, unlike anything you might have come across in your short journey towards the sun before you will return back to the ground to give rise to more of you, can help animals make important decisions which can affect further decisions to be taken in the future. So yes, to an extend, the brain, partnering with the mind, can control the future.

The mind has brought humans from being animals that hunted for survival and found shelter under boulders to advanced beings that can create out own ecosystems and destroy others. Over time, we’ve expanded so much in levels of conscious that we communicate with each other across distances unimaginable by pollen.

The mind is what makes us human. As I was saying, friends of uncle Darwin often say the mind is the most important advancement in evolution so far. I’ll tell you more about that later. The mind is, however, never used to it’s full potential because as I said, it is not quantifiable in the physical realm. So the only way for us humans to make the most out of our minds’ power is to keep trying to push it to its limits and beyond. There’s always something new to learn.

Perhaps your mom can tell you a bit about that. I talked to her once. For now, I’ll take leave. Have thoughts to process. Things to take care of. Catch you later

“You are an explorer, and you represent our species, and the greatest good you can do is to bring back a new idea, because our world is endangered by the absence of good ideas. Our world is in crisis because of the absence of consciousness”
